Preparation Methods:
1.Toluene Oxidation Method: It is oxidized with air or oxygen under the action of a catalyst to produce benzoic acid.
2.Phthalic Anhydride Decarboxylation Method: Phthalic anhydride undergoes a decarboxylation reaction at high temperature to prepare benzoic acid.

Benzoic acid and its sodium salt, sodium benzoate, are widely used food preservatives. It exhibits strong antibacterial effects in acidic foods, especially suitable for jams, fruit juices, etc., with a pH range of 2.5-4.0. Its solubility is improved by converting it into sodium benzoate.
