Sodium formate (Sodium Formate), with a CAS number of 141 - 53 - 7, holds an important position in the chemical industry. From a chemical structure perspective, its molecular formula is Na(HCOO), which is formed by the combination of sodium ions and formate ions through ionic bonds. In terms of physical properties, it is a white crystalline powder, readily soluble in water. At 20°C, its solubility is approximately 100g/100mL. Its aqueous solution is weakly alkaline, with a melting point of around 253°C, and it decomposes into sodium carbonate and hydrogen at high temperatures.
In terms of production, there are mainly two routes. The synthesis method involves the reaction of carbon monoxide and sodium hydroxide under high temperature, high pressure, and the action of a catalyst. It can also be obtained as a by - product of the condensation reaction of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in the production of pentaerythritol, followed by separation and purification. Application scenarios of sodium formate:
1.Leather factory/tannery: This is the most important traditional application field of sodium formate.
Use: In the chrome tanning process, sodium formate acts as a strong reducing agent and complexing agent. It can efficiently reduce toxic hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium required for leather tanning. At the same time, it helps to adjust the pH value of the tanning solution, enabling chromium to penetrate the leather more evenly, improving the softness, fullness and heat resistance of the leather.
2. Chemical plant (producing oxalic acid):
Use: Sodium formate is a key intermediate in the production of oxalic acid. Sodium oxalate can be obtained through the dehydrogenation reaction (heating and melting) of sodium formate, and then oxalic acid is obtained by acidification. Oxalic acid is widely used in rare earth extraction, pharmaceutical manufacturing, bleaching, metal polishing and other fields.
